On April 12, 1961, the world's first human-powered satellite spacecraft was launched into Earth orbit. It was our Yuri Gagarin! Since then, this day has been celebrated in Russia as Cosmonautics Day, and in the world as International Human Spaceflight Day.

In Russia, the holiday is established by the Federal Law of March 13, 1995 as a memorable date. At the international level, the status of the holiday was consolidated in 2011, when the UN General Assembly, at the initiative of Russia, proclaimed April 12 the International Day of Human Spaceflight.

Interestingly, the idea to establish Cosmonautics Day was originally proposed by German Titov, Yuri Gagarin's understudy during the first space flight. It was he who proposed the creation of World Space Day and appealed to the UN with a corresponding proposal.
